Bruening Rock Products Sponsors New "Rock Solid Student" Award at Decorah High School

DECORAH — Decorah High School has announced the first recipients of its new "Rock Solid Student" Award, made possible through the support of Bruening Rock Products. The quarterly award recognizes one student from each grade level (9–12) who demonstrates academic achievement or improvement, a strong work ethic, good character and integrity. Faculty nominate students, and DHS office staff review submissions to select the winners. Bruening Rock Products partnered with LetterWerks to create a permanent plaque for each grade level, updated quarterly with engraved nameplates. Honorees also receive a certificate and recognition in the Viking Newsletter. Quarter 1 Rock Solid Student Honorees: 9th Grade: Tristan Sheppard "Tristan always has a positive attitude and is willing to dive into whatever task is at hand. Overall, Tristan is always looking for new ways to create and express himself," said Erik Dutcher, art teacher. 10th Grade: Nils Peterson "Nils is by far my most engaged, creative, curious and compassionate student. He constantly works hard and helps others do their best. On top of that, he is the friendliest, happiest student and is always lifting others up," said Mr. Wilker, math teacher. 11th Grade: Owen Rix "Owen is always willing to contribute, listen and put his best foot forward. He knows how to include others and make everyone feel valued," said Mr. Carlson, social studies teacher. 12th Grade: Naomi Pedlar "Naomi shows outstanding leadership in my classroom. She is attentive and engaged, consistently setting a positive example for others both in the shop and the classroom. Naomi has been a rock-solid student and truly deserves this award," said Mr. Waskow, industrial arts teacher. Looking ahead, Bruening Rock Products plans to establish a Rock Solid Student Dollars for Scholars scholarship for seniors, to be awarded annually to a former recipient. "Decorah High School thanks Bruening Rock Products, especially President Greg Bruening and Human Resources Director Jamelle Lingle, for sponsoring the Rock Solid Student award," said DHS Principal Mr. Hurst. "We also thank our faculty and staff for submitting nominations. Congratulations to our first-quarter winners Tristan Sheppard, Nils Peterson, Owen Rix and Naomi Pedlar.
