Storm System Poised to Disrupt Thanksgiving Travel With Season's First Snow

DECORAH —What will pick up as a rainy start to the week will likely turn into the region's first real taste of winter, just as many people prep to hit the road for Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service in La Crosse says a developing storm system will sweep through the area beginning tonight, pulling in colder air and changing rain over to snow. For much of the region, it will be the first "actual" snowfall of the season, and forecasters warn that the timing couldn't be worse. Snow is expected to spread across the area late tonight into Wednesday morning, creating a possibly dangerous travel window. Areas along and north of Interstate 90 stand to see the most accumulation, with forecasters noting that northern Wisconsin and Minnesota have the highest chances of topping six inches. Even lighter snowfall could cause problems as drivers adjust to their first occasion of winter roads. Winds gusting up to 45 mph out of the northwest could blow snow across open roads and reduce visibility. For anyone heading out early for the holiday, officials say to expect travel impacts that range from inconvenient to severe. Forecasters are encouraging travelers to rethink their timing if possible. This afternoon should offer the steadiest conditions. By as early as tonight, roads may become snow-covered and visibility could deteriorate quickly. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Wednesday afternoon and evening once the storm moves out. For those who must travel during the storm, meteorologists offer a list of winter-driving reminders: allow extra time, slow down, leave additional space for braking, share travel plans with someone and avoid distractions. Once the system departs, temperatures will plunge, bringing single-digit to near-zero wind chills Thursday and Friday morning. The cold is expected to linger into the weekend.
