The Highlands Opens Its Doors: Residents and Staff Complete Move to New Facility

DECORAH — After years of planning and construction, residents and staff officially completed the transfer to The Highlands, the newly constructed Aase Haugen Senior Services facility, on Wednesday, December 17. The move marks the culmination of a long-term effort to enhance care, comfort and dignity for residents while honoring the organization's legacy. Rex Nelson, director of operations and administrator, said the day felt both exciting and surreal. "It still needs a few finishing touches, but everything is completely ready to utilize," Nelson said. "When it came down to the wire, everyone really showed up." The transfer was a community-wide effort. More than 150 volunteers assisted with packing and preparing spaces to ensure a smooth transition for residents. Project contractor Brickl Bros. also went above and beyond, sending 15 employees to help with pre-move logistics. "That kind of support means everything," Nelson said. Cydney Weitzel While the new facility is now open, the organization's initial $3 million capital campaign, A New Place to Call Home, remains about $1 million short of its goal. Nelson said leadership remains grateful for the support received and views the opening as a starting point rather than a conclusion. "We've increased our staffing and are using what we have as an opportunity to grow," he said. "Down the road, we'll relaunch the campaign for future additions and expansions, whether that's staff housing or expanded assisted living. There are a lot of great ideas coming from our team." The move also brings a new identity. The organization is branding the facility under the name The Highlands, an overarching entity that will encompass all current and future facilities. Leaders said the name reflects both the area's geography and a more elevated experience for residents. Despite the rebrand, the Aase Haugen name will continue to be honored. A dedicated chapel and memorial display in the lobby of the main Highlands facility will preserve the history and memories associated with the former campus. "The new facility is going to be so great, especially because it's new and clean," said Stacey Collins, housekeeping and laundry supervisor. "When we cleaned the old building, you couldn't really tell because of how old it was. We were basically doing damage control. Maintenance did an amazing job keeping it going, but it was time." "Wow — just wow," Klimesh said. "It's such a big day. We've been building toward this for so many years. Being in a space that truly reflects the care and love we feel for our residents is incredible. And we couldn't have done it without our community of volunteers."
