Luther College Mourns Director Of Facilities Jay Uthoff

DECORAH — Luther College is mourning the death of Jay Uthoff, the college's longtime director of facilities, college officials announced Tuesday. Uthoff served the Luther community for more than 40 years and was widely regarded as a pillar of the college. In a campus-wide message, President Brad Chamberlain described Uthoff as "among the very best of our community," noting he was beloved for his kindness, care and quiet joy. "Jay was an embodiment of servant leadership and of all of the values our community holds dear," Chamberlain wrote. "He will be deeply, deeply missed." The college is grieving alongside Uthoff's family, including his wife, Kathy, and children Megan, Andrew and Matthew, as well as his many colleagues and students. In honor of Uthoff's legacy, the Luther College flag at the College Avenue entrance is flying at half-staff. The campus carillon also chimed the Luther alma mater at noon. Luther officials said the college is committed to supporting the campus community during the period of mourning. Pastoral support is available during winter break by emailing ministry@luther.edu. The Office for College Ministries will offer in-person support for students, staff and faculty following winter break. Staff and faculty may seek assistance through the college's Employee Assistance Program. Students needing guidance on available resources may contact the Office of Student Life at students@luther.edu. Information regarding memorial arrangements will be shared as it becomes available. In his message to the community, Chamberlain reflected on the timing of the loss near the winter solstice, writing that even in a season of darkness and grief, the Luther community holds "candles of hope" for one another.
