Decorah Swears in New Mayor, Council Members at Start of 2026 Term

DECORAH — Decorah's newly elected mayor and city council members were officially sworn into office Monday night during a City Council meeting marking the formal start of the city's 2026 governing body. Mayor Andy Carlson took the oath of office alongside Johanna Bergan, elected to represent the city's 3rd Ward; Cody Whittle, re-elected as an at-large council member; and Randy Schissel, re-elected to represent the 5th Ward. Schissel was also sworn in as mayor pro tempore. The oath ceremony followed the Pledge of Allegiance, roll call and public comment. City Clerk Keri Sand administered the oaths, with each official raising their right hand and swearing to support the U.S. Constitution, the Iowa Constitution and to faithfully perform the duties of their office as required by law. Carlson, who previously served on the council before being elected mayor, thanked residents for their support and emphasized his commitment to listening and accessibility. "I look forward to leading and listening," Carlson said. "I have my cell number on the city website. If you ever need to call, I may not be a voting member, but I can put things on the agenda and help steer things in the direction that is best for Decorah." Bergan, returning to the council, spoke about the importance of community engagement and inclusivity. She said she hopes to hear from residents who do not often attend council meetings and encouraged people to share ideas, perspectives and recommendations directly with her. "I ran for council because I believe this is a community that can have space for everyone to belong and thrive," Bergan said. Whittle, also sworn in for another term, reflected on the oath and his role as an elected official. He said he remains committed to the principles behind the Constitution and to serving the community with honesty.
