Decorah Girls Make a Statement at Anamosa Invitational

DECORAH — On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Decorah girls' wrestling team traveled to Anamosa High School for the Anamosa Girls Invitational, and they came back home with a some top-tier performances under their belt. In a day packed with back-to-back high intensity matches and top competition from across the state, the Vikings wrestled their way to a second-place team finish, scoring 170.5 points behind Cedar Rapids Prairie's 229. Delivering a standout performance Ana Simon at 170 pounds, who showcased both power and precision. Simon breezed through the bracket, taking down opponent after opponent with three straight pins: in the quarterfinals, she quickly put away Channing Kuker of Mount Vernon in just 38 seconds. Moments later, she pinned Gracie Pinckney, also of Mount Vernon, in 43 seconds to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Simon faced Raelene Hawkins of Iowa Valley (Marengo) and finished the job with a pin in 1 minute 36 seconds, capping an undefeated day. But Simon wasn't the only Viking leaving the court with pride. Lauren Luzon (145 lbs) and Sophie Adams (100 lbs) both captured first-place finishes in their weight classes, while Ellie Adams (130 lbs), Maddie Lipp (235 lbs), and Simone Downing (125 lbs) earned second-place medals. Olivia Sheffield (110 lbs) placed third, and Isabella Koss (115 lbs) and Kelsey Becker (120 lbs) closing out the scoring with strong sixth- and seventh-place finishes. Throughout the day, the team showed off an essential but underrated talent: consistency across weight classes. Earning points in every corner of the mat, Decorah faced stiff competition from Cedar Rapids Jefferson (170 points), Independence (146 points) and Iowa City High (136 points), yet still managed to secure a strong finish.
