City Fiber Project Moves Forward, Construction Costs Below Estimates

DECORAH — The Decorah Communications Utility Board approved payment of utility claims and received updates on the city's fiber-to-the-home project during a meeting Tuesday evening. Board members approved claims primarily related to the citywide fiber project, including invoices from RNS for design, GIS mapping and related field work, as well as other routine publication and professional expenses. Before unanimously approving the claims, members questioned staff about the scope of the design work, billing structure and deliverables. City Manager Travis Goedken said the fiber network has been divided into 10 construction "pockets," with design and material planning completed for all areas to allow construction to proceed efficiently. Field surveys have been conducted in portions of the Flats neighborhood and downtown to support detailed GIS mapping and construction planning. Goedken reported that overall project costs are tracking below earlier estimates. Updated design quantities have reduced projected construction costs from roughly $10.6 million to about $10.26 million. Additional savings are expected in electronics and customer equipment costs. Board members also discussed coordination with contractors, engineers and network partners, along with preparations for future site surveys to install service lines to individual properties.
