Early Peace Corps Volunteers Present at February Meeting of Luther College Woman's Club

DECORAH — Learn about the early days of the Peace Corps from some of its earliest volunteers at the next meeting of the Luther College Woman's Club, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the Peace Dining Room on the Luther College campus. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool leaves at 1:10 p.m. In addition to the program, a short business meeting will be held. Attendees are asked to contribute $6 toward refreshments. To mark the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps, four of its earliest volunteers—Lyle Otte, Pat Johnson, Joann Hagen and George Hagen—will share memories of their service. Otte, a St. Olaf College graduate and retired educator, served in Colombia from 1965 to 1968. Johnson, a Oberlin College graduate whose later career was in social work and education, served in the Philippines from 1961 to 1963. Joann Hagen, a St. Olaf College graduate and retired nurse, served in Malaysia from 1963 to 1965. George Hagen, a University of Minnesota graduate who later worked in engineering for the Chevron Corporation, also served in Malaysia from 1963 to 1965. About the Peace CorpsThe Peace Corps is an independent agency and program of the United States government that trains and deploys volunteers to communities in partner countries around the world. It was established in March 1961 by an executive order of John F. Kennedy and authorized by Congress that September through the Peace Corps Act. The agency assists developing countries by providing skilled workers in fields such as education, health, entrepreneurship, women's empowerment and community development.
