Traveling Demonstrators Criticize ELCA Positions During Luther College Protest

DECORAH — A pair of protesters opposing abortion and LGBTQ rights appeared near the Luther College campus Monday morning, saying they chose the school because of its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). One protester, who declined to give his name, said he and others travel across the country sharing religious messages they describe as based on "the truth of God's word." He said the group is not affiliated with a specific organization and identifies as non-denominational Christians. The protester said the group visits college campuses and public events nationwide and recently traveled to Las Vegas, as well as locations on the East Coast and in the South. He said the group selected Luther College because of the ELCA's positions on social issues, which he characterized as supporting abortion rights and LGBTQ inclusion. The protester said college campuses are a focus because students are forming their beliefs and spiritual views, stating that one someone "gets to their thirties," they are effectively set in their beliefs. "Generally, college students and high school students are more accessible for the word of God," he said. "They're at a stage in their life where they're making decisions on their beliefs." The protesters carried signs with messages related to abortion and LGBTQ issues. He said the group does not seek publicity and often avoids speaking with media due to concerns about political bias in coverage. "We're not out here to get publicity," he said. "We're out here to preach the truth of God's word." When asked whether they had been invited to campus, the protester said they travel to campuses nationwide and chose Luther because they consider it politically liberal. Some onlookers reported a student response earlier in the day that included singing near the protest site. When reached out to for comment, Luther College provided the following statement: "Luther College respects the right of free expression, but does not condone the messages expressed by anonymous individuals who stood on city property today adjacent to our campus."
