Luther College Senate Recognizes Turning Point USA Chapter, Drawing Mixed Reaction

DECORAH 一 Luther College Student Senate officially recognized a student chapter of Turning Point USA on campus last Thursday. The decision was met with mixed reactions, with some members of the public praising the decision, and others raising concerns about the group's messaging and relevance to the college. This vote follows in the wake of a previous vote by the senate in October, 2025, to deny official recognition to a proposed chapter. The decision came during a senate meeting Thursday. Ahead of the meeting, the Winneshiek County Republicans posted on social media that the session would be open to the public, though the meeting was limited to Luther students, staff and alumni per the Student Senate's constitution. After the vote, the county party organization praised the decision and the efforts of two students involved in forming the chapter, writing that the students "did a great job presenting their case to the Student Senate and Luther College now has a Turning Point USA chapter." Turning Point USA is a conservative nonprofit organization founded in 2012 and affiliated with political commentator Charlie Kirk. The group focuses on promoting conservative values on college campuses across the United States, often sparking controversy for its stances on social issues. Charlie Kirk was CEO up until he was executed in September of 2025 at Utah Valley University. There are currently around 900 official college chapters in the United States, according to the organization. Luther PRIDE, a campus student organization, released a statement following the senate's decision expressing concern about the group's messaging. In its statement, Luther PRIDE described Turning Point USA as an organization that "has made insurmountable efforts to spread LGBTQIA+ hate." The group said it supports First Amendment rights but acknowledged that some students may feel "discomfort" or "unsafe" following the recognition of the chapter. "With this happening we are going to do everything in our power to continue our advocacy of inclusion and acceptance for all, especially queer identifying students," the statement read. "We urge you to reach out to us, counselors, or administration if you feel unsafe due to this decision." Luther PRIDE organized a student-led protest Friday in response to the senate's action. An alumnus who attended the meeting and did not wish to be named said they did not fault the senate but questioned the decision by the students who sought affiliation with the national organization rather than forming an independent group. "I'm not going to condemn the senate's decision, they can only do so much," the alumnus said. "My main takeaway was questioning the desire of having a student group under the umbrella of Turning Point USA, rather than students forming their own group with their own goals." The alumnus criticized the national organization, calling it "racist, sexist, and corrupt," and questioned why students would choose to affiliate with it "primarily for access to materials such as pamphlets and reading resources", "Anyone can make pamphlets for you.
