Nordic Studies the Focus of March Meeting of Luther College Woman's Club

DECORAH — Founded in 1861, Luther College was the first college in the United States established by Norwegian immigrants. Today, 165 years later, Norway remains a focus of the college's curriculum. Hear about the opportunities Luther students have to study Norway at the next meeting of the Luther College Woman's Club, scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the Peace Dining Room on the Luther College campus. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool leaves at 1:10 p.m. In addition to the program, a short business meeting will be held. Attendees are asked to contribute $6 toward refreshments. During the meeting, Maren Johnson, associate professor of Nordic Studies and director of the Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies, will team with Luther students to present "Norway: Rooted in Tradition, Expansive in Opportunity." The program will explore Luther's Nordic Studies program and the various study-away opportunities available to students to explore Norway's cultural heritage and innovation. About Maren Johnson Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in Norwegian language and literature from Pacific Lutheran University and master's and doctoral degrees in Scandinavian language and literature from the University of Washington. She began teaching at Luther in 2014 and has led six January-term courses in Norway. About the Luther College Woman's Club The Luther College Woman's Club has long baked treats for Luther students, with proceeds funding scholarships for deserving students. To date, the club has raised more than $325,000 in scholarship funds. All individuals from Decorah and surrounding communities are invited to participate.
