PBS Documentary "Keep Quiet and Forgive" to Premiere in Spring Grove

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — The PBS documentary "Keep Quiet and Forgive" will premiere in Minnesota March 20–22 at Spring Grove Cinema in southeastern Minnesota. The 90-minute film examines sexual abuse within Amish and similar communities and the culture of silence that can allow it to continue. Growing up in a traditional Swartzentruber Amish community, Lizzie Hershberger said she was taught to "forgive and forget." Thirty years after being sexually assaulted, Hershberger broke her silence and began speaking publicly about abuse within her community, helping spark conversations among Amish survivors across North America. "For many survivors, speaking out is incredibly difficult," Hershberger said. "My hope is this documentary helps others realize they are not alone and their voices matter." Filmed over five years in several states across Amish communities, the documentary features accounts from survivors who describe abuse and the challenges of seeking justice. Participants in the film include Menno, who recounts leaving an abusive home; Katrina, who faces pressure to drop charges against her assailant; and Elizabeth, who describes rebuilding her life after helping convict her abusive husband. Showtimes are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Each screening will be followed by a live question-and-answer session with individuals featured in the film. Books, brochures and resource information will be available before and after each screening. Tickets cost $8 plus tax for adults and $6 plus tax for seniors 65 and older. The film was directed and produced by Sarah McClure with Infinite Stories Productions in association with Independent Lens.
