Decorah Highlighted in Statewide Report for Economic Impact, Regional Role

DECORAH — A newly-released report examining the economic impact of Iowa communities highlights Decorah as a key contributor to the state's economy and regional development. The study, "Economic Contribution of Local Communities to the State Economy," was prepared for the Iowa League of Cities and analyzes how incorporated cities across Iowa support employment, economic activity and regional growth. Researchers involved reviewed all incorporated communities in the state and selected eight total cities as "case studies" representing the range of communities across Iowa. Decorah was chosen to represent smaller regional cities that serve as cultural, economic and community hubs for its surrounding rural areas. According to the report, Decorah's local economy generates an estimated $349.8 million in value-added economic activity and $676.8 million in total economic output. The community overall supports more than 4,200 jobs and produces about $6.7 million in property tax revenue used to fund city services. The study also notes that spending by Decorah residents and businesses creates ripple effects well beyond just the city, supporting additional employment and economic activity throughout Winneshiek County and other parts of the state. Beyond all of this economic data and figures, the report broadcasts several features that make Decorah distinctive, including its strong Norwegian cultural identity, tourism sector and educational presence. Luther College was cited as a major contributor to the community's vitality, attracting visitors and students while supporting local businesses. Several local attractions were also recognized as assets that enhance both quality of life and economic activity, including Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Dunning Springs Park and Trout Run Trail. Reports like this are important because they can guide future discussions about housing, workforce development, infrastructure investment and long-term economic planning for communities like Decorah.
