2026 Street Construction to Begin This Week

DECORAH — The City of Decorah is notifying residents that work is expected to begin on two street improvement projects before the end of March, weather permitting. Work on the College Drive bridge over the Upper Iowa River will begin the week of March 23, weather permitting. General contractor Skyline Construction estimates the project will last six weeks. Through traffic on College Drive over the bridge will remain open, with a single lane in each direction. Traffic will initially be directed onto the east half of the bridge for three weeks before switching to the opposite side. Improvements will include new crosswalks, traffic signal equipment, removal of turn lanes on Heivly Street and Fifth Avenue, and replacement of the bridge approaches. The west end of Heivly Street will be closed to traffic for the duration of the project. Eastbound traffic on Fifth Avenue will be detoured onto Painter Street and Iowa Avenue during portions of the work. Heivly Street, between State Street and just west of the River/Claiborne/Heivly intersection, will be closed beginning the week of March 30 through November. A signed detour will direct traffic around the work zone using Water Street. Street work will also result in the temporary closure of the post office parking lot. Skyline Construction will begin with pavement removal, followed by underground utility work and street paving later this fall. Residents with questions can call City Hall at 563-382-3651.
