Decorah School Board Approves Application to Iowa Conference Realignment Committee

DECORAH, Iowa—The Decorah Community School District Board of Education approved an application to the state's Conference Realignment Committee, seeking placement in a stable athletic conference after operating independently in recent years. The board voted Monday to submit the application ahead of a state deadline, advancing a proposal that would place Decorah in a newly configured conference made up largely of former members of the Northeast Iowa Conference, along with additional schools to create a sustainable league structure. District officials said the move is intended to resolve ongoing challenges tied to competing without conference affiliation, a situation that has required extensive independent scheduling and increased travel for student-athletes. "Decorah has operated our activities and athletics as an independent for the last two years," Board President Cindy Goodner explained during the meeting, noting that planning for the upcoming 2027 school year is already underway under that model. The application follows recent state legislation establishing a Conference Realignment Committee, a group of superintendents and activities directors tasked with addressing alignment issues across Iowa. The committee is expected to prioritize schools like Decorah that are currently without a conference. Activities Director Adam Riley said the committee has outlined an accelerated timeline for such cases, with applications due immediately and decisions expected by early May. Under the proposal submitted by Decorah, the district is advocating for a regional conference that aligns schools of similar size and geography, an approach officials say would reduce travel time and create more consistent competition. Goodner added that the enrollment differences are comparable to those already present in other conferences. The application also includes alternative options for the committee's consideration, including potential placement in existing conferences such as the Upper Iowa and WAMAC, though district leaders indicated those scenarios present challenges. Previous efforts to join the Upper Iowa Conference were unsuccessful, and communication from the WAMAC suggested Decorah would not be approved if it applied, according to the discussion. Superintendent Tim Cronin said the new state process differs from past efforts because it requires the committee to recommend a placement, rather than simply approve or deny applications. That recommendation will then be forwarded to the Iowa Department of Education for final action. "This process might say no to our application, but will then place us in a conference," he noted. If approved, the new alignment would likely take effect in the 2027–28 school year, giving districts time to adjust schedules and logistics. Board members emphasized that remaining independent is not a viable long-term solution, citing increased costs, missed class time and the strain of building schedules without conference support. "It's just not sustainable forever," Goodner said, pointing to the added travel and organizational burden placed on students and staff. The proposed conference structure is designed to minimize disruption statewide by keeping existing leagues intact while forming a new grouping in northeast Iowa. Officials said alternative placements could trigger broader shifts, with potential ripple effects on other conferences. Community and staff input also played a role in shaping the proposal. Riley said the district incorporated feedback from coaches and prior community surveys, which emphasized geographic proximity and competitive balance as key priorities. Under the state's timeline, the Conference Realignment Committee is expected to review applications immediately, hold hearings in late April and issue a decision by May 8. An appeal process is available, though it is limited to whether proper procedures were followed. Board members expressed support for the application, describing it as consistent with discussions held over the past several years and aligned with the district's long-term goals. "I think our coaches, our community, everyone is on the same page about what we're asking for," Director Aaron Zander said. The motion to approve the application passed unanimously.
