Sprint, Throw, Win: Decorah Girls Track Captures Indoor Meet

DECORAH — For the second week in a row, the Decorah girls track and field team hosted a meet at Luther College. The meet took place Friday, March 27. In addition to Decorah, the teams in attendance were Charles City, Lanesboro-Fillmore Central-Mabel-Canton, Northwood-Kensett, Rushford-Peterson-Houston, Minnesota, and Waukon. The girls performed well in a variety of events, and coach Cristy Nimrod was pleased. "You can see the confidence building with this group," Nimrod said. That confidence led to several first-place finishes, including: senior Renae Wilson (55-meter hurdles, 200 meters), junior Audrey Essay (55 meters), sophomore Simone Downing (1,500 meters), junior Claire Storhoff (400 meters), Lauren Luzum (shot put); the relay of Eva Hurley, Ruth Kueny, Lauren Holthaus, and Rachel Spilde-Maki (4x800); the relay of Audrey Essa, Eden Northup, Ava Holthaus, and Avery Massman (4x200); the relay of Renae Wilson, Audrey Essa, Eva Hurley, and Raelyn Newhouse (distance medley); and the relay of Eden Northup, Claire Storhoff, Mahraz Murphy, and Cassandra Stammeyer (4x400). "[The team is] embracing challenges, and as a result, we're growing stronger as a team that truly supports and lifts each other up," Nimrod said. The girls will be back on the track for their first outdoor meet of the season on Saturday, April 4, when they travel to Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids for a 14-team invitational.
