Decorah Residents Eligible for Free Energy Audits this Spring

DECORAH — The Winneshiek Energy District is inviting income-qualifying households in Decorah to sign up for a free home energy audit by May 2026. Interested residents can view income requirements and register at energydistrict.org/audit or call 563-334-0538. The audits are funded through a grant to the city from the Iowa Economic Development Authority's Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant program, which supports energy efficiency improvements for low-income households. Single-family homes at or below 80% of area median income (roughly $57,000 or more for households) are eligible, based on Housing and Urban Development guidelines. "With rising energy costs—and air conditioning season right around the corner—a home energy audit is a useful tool for households looking to reduce utility costs," said WED Executive Director Kristin Eggen. "Lower-income households often pay a larger share of their income on utilities, and we are proud to partner with the city to help Decorah residents spend less on energy bills." A home energy audit helps homeowners and renters identify energy-saving opportunities, evaluate home efficiency, and plan short- and long-term conservation measures. Services include a blower door test to detect air leaks, utility bill analysis, appliance inventory, and connections to financial incentives and programs. Audits identify simple fixes as well as major equipment replacement needs. "Every home is a little different," said WED energy auditor Paul Cutting. "We focus on practical solutions to help homeowners reach goals in affordability, comfort, or environmental impact."
