Learn About Beekeeping at the Next Luther College Woman's Club Meeting

You'll want to remember this moment. Help us record what's happening in Decorah. DECORAH — The Luther College Woman's Club will host a program on beekeeping at its next meeting Tuesday, April 21. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Peace Dining Room on the Luther College campus. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool will depart at 1:10 p.m. A short business meeting will follow the program, and attendees are asked to contribute $6 for refreshments. Jed Becker will present "Beekeeping in Northeast Iowa," covering the basics of raising honeybees, the life cycle of bees and honey production. He will also bring equipment for a hands-on demonstration. "Show-and-tell was my favorite time in grade school, so I will bring some equipment that people can see and touch," Becker said. Becker, a Winneshiek County native, served two years in the U.S. Army before graduating from Iowa State University in 1976 and beginning a farming career. After selling his dairy herd in 2010-11, he began raising bees and has continued since. He maintains 10 hives and regularly gives presentations at service organizations, care facilities and schools. The Luther College Woman's Club has a long tradition of baking treats for Luther students, with proceeds supporting scholarships. The group has raised more than $325,000 for student scholarships.
