Russell Baldner to Present Vatican Tour, History Talk April 22

LUCAS, Iowa — A historical presentation and virtual tour of St. Peter's Basilica and the treasures of the Vatican Museums will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the German American Museum in St. Lucas. Titled "St. Peter's Basilica — The Greatest of All Churches," the program will be presented by Russell Baldner and offers a historical interpretation and personal tour of one of the most significant sites in Western Christianity. The presentation reflects on the significance of St. Peter's Basilica, built on the traditional site of the tomb of the Apostle Peter, whom Christ called a "rock." The basilica and the adjoining Vatican Museums stand at the historic center of Western Christianity and are known for their architecture, artistic works and centuries of history. The program features a selection of recent photography from Baldner's personal collection, along with historical and interpretive commentary. Part I will focus on the tomb of St. Peter, while Part II will highlight the Sistine Chapel. Attendees will be guided through a virtual tour of the Vatican, including St. Peter's Square, the interior of the basilica, the rooftop and the dome. The Vatican, the world's smallest independent state, is home to what has been described as "the richest and grandest church on earth." The event is hosted at the German American Museum, located in the former St. Luke Parish school building. The St. Luke Parish was founded in 1855 by German settlers. The parish school, once operated by the Franciscan Sisters of La Crosse, is now home the museum. Community members are invited to attend the presentation. Be the first to know!
