Young Readers Go Undercover in 'Operation: READ!'

The fire, the vote, the triumph — when it happens, Decorah News shows up. Support us being there. DECORAH — Decorah Public Library has announced its 2026 summer reading program. Titled Operation: READ!, the spy-themed program will offer a series of activities and events designed to help young readers maintain their reading skills throughout the summer. The program will begin with a spy mission-themed kickoff event May 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carrie Lee playground and field. Participants will be encouraged to read at least 20 minutes a day, five days a week. For every five days completed, readers will unlock a clue bringing them one step closer to learning where the final mission will take place. Additional weekly challenges and prizes will be available at the library. The summer reading program is an annual initiative offering prizes for time spent reading, along with community activities for all ages. "The summer reading program is one of our most popular programs of the year," said Sophie Nall, children's and young adult librarian. "It's a great opportunity to keep reading skills sharp and combat the summer slide, while also giving families an opportunity to enjoy free community activities."
