Decorah Community Immigrant Rights to Host Educational Event on Proposed 'Separation Ordinance'

DECORAH — Decorah Community Immigrant Rights will host a free public educational event titled "What is the Separation Ordinance?" on Thursday, April 9, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at The Landing, 211 College Drive. The event is designed to help community members understand the proposed Separation Ordinance, a local measure that would define the scope of cooperation between Decorah law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Organizers said the evening will focus on education, not advocacy, while providing attendees with facts and resources. Event highlights include: Panel and presentation: Local organizers will explain what the Separation Ordinance is, what it would do and how it differs from existing policies. Q&A session: Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions. Educational materials: Handouts, FAQs and informational sheets will be available. Buttons and stickers: Free materials will be available to attendees. "There is a lot of confusion and concern about what the Separation Ordinance actually says and how it would work," said Joshua Ratel-Khan, a DCIR volunteer. "Our goal is to create a welcoming, low-pressure space where anyone — whether they support, oppose or are still unsure — can come learn and ask questions." The event is open to Decorah residents, students and members of neighboring communities. The Landing is wheelchair accessible, and the program will be held in English.
