Three Danish Thinkers to be Explored at Valdres Lodge Event

DECORAH — The Sons of Norway Valdres Lodge will host a program April 21 featuring speaker Myrv Christopherson, who will discuss three Danish figures whose writings, he argues, have had a lasting influence on Denmark, Scandinavia and the broader world. All three completed theological studies at the University of Copenhagen: N.F.S. Grundtvig, Søren Kierkegaard and Kaj Munk. Their influence has shaped church life, education, governance and philosophy. Christopherson will highlight key aspects of their lives and writings. Christopherson, president emeritus of Dana College, was born in Milltown, Wisconsin, in 1939 to a Norwegian American mother and a Danish American father. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dana College in 1961 and a doctorate from Purdue University in 1965. His career in teaching and administration included positions at Purdue University, the University of Wisconsin and Dana College. After retiring to Decorah, he commuted for several years while serving as president of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education in Washington, D.C. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave. A lodge meeting will precede the program at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public, and attendees do not need to be of Norwegian ancestry.
