Letter to the Editor - Pass SF 2099

Dear Editor and Senator Klimesh, On March 26, a group of us from across Iowa traveled to the State Capitol for Humane Lobby Day to meet with you and other lawmakers. Unfortunately, we missed you. We understand you and your colleagues are incredibly busy, especially as the session winds down and everyone is eager to return home to their districts. Still, this issue is too important to Iowans of all walks of life to let it pass without speaking up. Iowans have been flooding your office—and those of your Senate colleagues—with emails, phone calls, and personal visits. Animal advocates, law enforcement officers, veterinarians, domestic abuse victim advocates, and many of your own legislative colleagues have all urged action. Even Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer has added her voice in support. What we all want is simple: passage of SF 2099, the bill that mirrors the animal torture legislation already passed unanimously by the Iowa House. This measure would make intentional acts of extreme cruelty—such as crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, or impaling an animal—a Class D felony on the first offense, with stronger penalties for repeat offenders. Iowa is currently the only state in the nation where animal torture is not a felony on the first offense. It's time to change that. As Senate Majority Leader, you have the power to bring this bill forward. You have the ability to address any remaining concerns within your caucus and build the consensus needed to act. You also have the opportunity to protect Iowa's pets and the families who love them. On behalf of animal advocates, pet owners, and concerned citizens throughout the state—including members of Iowans Against Breed Bans and many others who focus on responsible ownership rather than breed discrimination—please lead the Iowa Senate in passing SF 2099 and sending it to Governor Reynolds for her signature. Our pets are family. They deserve meaningful protection from the worst acts of cruelty. Iowans are watching and hoping you will make this happen before the session ends.
