UPDATE: Second Round of Severe Storms Possible in Decorah Area Tuesday Afternoon

DECORAH — Forecasters are warning of another round of potentially severe weather Tuesday afternoon that could impact Decorah and the surrounding northeast Iowa region. According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop around 3 p.m. and move east into southern Wisconsin. While uncertainty remains about how far north the storms will reach, conditions could support significant severe weather if storms track over the area. A Hazardous Weather Outlook issued early Tuesday morning by the National Weather Service La Crosse places northeast Iowa, including Winneshiek County, in an area where severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening. The greatest concerns include: Large hail exceeding 2 inches in diameter Damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph Locally heavy rainfall The possibility of a few tornadoes along a narrow corridor still being refined by forecasters Decorah sits near the northern edge of the highest-risk area, meaning impacts could vary depending on how storms develop. Some locations may see significant weather, while others could remain dry. The outlook also notes that additional chances for severe weather could return Wednesday afternoon and possibly again Friday evening, though details remain uncertain. UPDATE: A Tornado Warning has now been issued for much of the region. According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a tornado warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday and includes a large portion of northeast and central Iowa, including Winneshiek County. Counties included in the watch span much of eastern and central Iowa, including Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties locally, along with larger population centers such as Black Hawk, Linn, Johnson and Polk counties. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. Residents should be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.
