Earth Day, Full Moon Hike Highlight Effigy Mounds Events

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa — Effigy Mounds National Monument will host a variety of interpretive programs in April and May, offering educational and outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages. Golden Eagles Club presentations The park's Golden Eagles Club will hold its final presentations of the season in April. All programs begin at 10 a.m. in the visitor center. • April 16 — Park staff will discuss the Three Sisters and pre-contact agriculture in the Driftless Area. Participants may take home seeds to plant. • April 23 — Park Ranger Brian Gibbs will lead a mindfulness walk on the Yellow River Boardwalk. Earth Day Junior Ranger Day • April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Park rangers from Effigy Mounds and Black Hawk Park will lead hands-on activities. Participants can earn both an Effigy Mounds Junior Ranger badge and a National Park Service Angler Junior Ranger badge. Full Moon Hike to Fire Point • May 1, 8 p.m. — A ranger-led hike will give visitors an opportunity to view the full moon over the mounds and the Mississippi River. Migratory Bird Day • May 2, 10 a.m. — Local birder Dennis Kirschbaum will lead a birding walk on the Yellow River Boardwalk, which is fully accessible. • May 9, 10 a.m. — Park staff will lead a family-friendly birding walk along the same route. Additional hands-on activities will be available in the visitor center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Historic Preservation Day • May 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Park staff and community organizations will highlight the history of the Driftless Area and ongoing preservation efforts, including work to protect mound sites and other cultural resources. Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some shaped like animals. The monument is located about three miles north of Marquette and 22 miles south of Waukon along Highway 76.
