Decorah Community School District Announces Groundbreaking Ceremony for New PK–2 Elementary School

DECORAH — The Decorah Community School District has announced a groundbreaking ceremony for its new PK-2 elementary school, a project district leaders say was made possible through strong community support and the approval of a 2024 bond referendum. The ceremony is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. May 12 on the playground at John Cline Elementary School. Families, project partners and community members are invited to attend. Due to ongoing construction and the timing of the event near the end of the school day, parking will be limited. Attendees are asked to use the large community lot south of Heivly Street and walk to the site. The new facility will feature flexible learning spaces, enhanced security, improved accessibility and updated infrastructure designed to meet current and future educational needs. "Breaking ground on this project represents far more than the start of construction—it marks the beginning of a new chapter for our students, staff and the broader Decorah community," Board President Cindy Goodner said. "We are proud to take this important step toward creating a school that reflects our community's shared vision of excellence and opportunity." District officials said planning for the facility has been underway for more than a decade. The project was approved by voters in fall 2024. The district said it appreciates the support of families, voters, staff and community partners and will continue providing updates as construction progresses.
