Local Scouts Race to the Finish at Pack 3067 Pinewood Derby

DECORAH — Decorah Lutheran Church was filled with excitement April 25 as Cub Scout Pack 3067 hosted its annual Pinewood Derby, bringing together local racing enthusiasts of all ages for a scouting tradition. The Pinewood Derby is a signature Cub Scout event in which participants design, build and race small, gravity-powered wooden cars. Using kits that include a block of pine, wheels and axles, Scouts apply creativity and basic STEM principles to craft their racers, learning lessons in engineering, patience and problem-solving. Parents are encouraged to assist their Scout with the creation of the racer, making it a family affair. This year's event showcased a range of designs and personalities, with 12 Scouts competing in categories including "Car I Would Most Like to Drive," "Scout Spirit" and "Most Bling." Family members gathered to cheer on racers, celebrating craftsmanship and sportsmanship. The highlight of the day was the speed race, where Bergan Martin claimed the title for fastest overall car, earning top honors on the track and taking home the Pinewood Derby trophy. Tristan Reed was runner-up for fastest car, followed by Alec Wilkins. Beyond the competition, the Pinewood Derby continues to foster family bonding and community connection as parents and Scouts work side by side to bring their ideas to life. Pack 3067 welcomes new members throughout the year. Scouts meet once per month on Mondays at 6 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church.
