Decorah Boys Golf Sets School Record, Wins Dual Meet

The Decorah boys golf team set a school record and added a dual meet win during a strong, fair-weathered week of competition. At the Winneshiek County Classic on April 21 at South Winneshiek Golf Course, Decorah shot a school-record 288, breaking a 47-year-old mark of 291 set in 1979. "Wow, what a day of golf in Winneshiek County. We played amazing and had some young golfers really step up today," coach Casey Bouska said. "I couldn't be more proud of how our team competed." The previous record team included Scott Fjelstul and Marty Weis. The coach also credited Coach Gaard for helping verify the record. Jacob Stevens led the field with a 10-under-par 62, setting a new school individual record. He broke the previous mark of 66 (-6), held by Fjelstul. "Jacob had an amazing round of golf and the whole course was buzzing about his round all day," Bouska said. "On the 18th hole, a par 3, he stuck it tight and nailed his birdie putt to cement his place in Decorah golf history." Stevens shot 30 on the front nine and 32 on the back nine to earn medalist honors. Jack Turner finished runner-up with a 73, followed by Tommy Sexton with a 75 and Kasen Tyler with a 78. Jackson Naber shot 88 and Caden Hubka added an 89. "Sophomore Kasen Tyler (78) and Jack Turner (73) played lights out," Bouska said. Decorah finished ahead of South Winneshiek (300) and Turkey Valley (349). Decorah carried that performance into April 23, defeating New Hampton 310-358 at Oneota Golf Course. Stevens again earned medalist honors with a 71 (35-36), followed by Sexton with a 77 (40-37). Naber shot 79, Hubka 84, Tyler 83, and Turner 87. Decorah swept the top three varsity spots on the leaderboard, while several junior varsity players also came away with some strong rounds. Evan Roe, Garrett Henry and Kade O'Hara each shot 79, and Byrson Wemark added an 82. The junior varsity team finished with a 319. "Another great day. Jacob Stevens was our medalist (71) and Tommy Sexton (77) runner-up," Bouska said. "Our JV team shot a 319, which is a tremendous score and they should be very proud.
