Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 9 in Winneshiek County Sends One Driver to Hospital

A serious two-vehicle crash on Iowa Highway 9 in Winneshiek County left one driver hospitalized with injuries and both vehicles heavily damaged, according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office. The crash occurred Wednesday, April 23, at approximately 4:27 p.m., according to the report. Kevin Magic, 50, of Cresco, Iowa, was traveling on Highway 9 when he entered the opposing lane, leading to a collision with an oncoming truck. The driver of the truck, Nicholas Kocken, 40, of Sparta, Wisconsin, said he attempted to avoid the crash but was unsuccessful. Magic's vehicle struck the side of Kocken's truck and trailer. Magic told authorities he had worked an overnight shift and was tired. A witness confirmed the account, stating she saw Magic's vehicle cross the centerline by about four feet before striking Kocken's vehicle. Emergency responders from Regional Health Services of Howard County transported Magic from the scene with suspected serious injuries. He required mechanical extrication from the vehicle. Authorities reported the vehicle was heavily damaged. Kocken was not reported to have sustained serious injuries.
