Decorah Fire Department Adds Two Full-Time Volunteers, Highlights Recruitment and Retention Conversation

DECORAH — The Decorah Volunteer Fire Department has welcomed Grady Rose and Christian Johnson as full members following a vote at its April meeting, marking the completion of a one-year probationary period that included weekly drills and Firefighter I certification training. Rose, a Luther College student, said his path into firefighting was shaped by family tradition. "My dad's a fire chief back home, and my dream has always been to be a fireman," Rose said. "I decided to join the fire service here and get some experience. It's been nothing but awesome." Johnson, a Decorah native and head boys swim coach at Decorah High School, said his inspiration also came from family. "My stepdad was a member of the fire department and has always been a big role model," he said. "Following him and serving the community has been my inspiration." For other volunteers, interest often begins with family ties or firsthand experience. Luther College sophomore Cade Averhoff, currently in probationary training, said both influenced his decision. "My brother-in-law is a firefighter in Cresco," he said. "And there was a field fire near Waukon that we helped with. That got me into it." John Smorstad, a former employee of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said he joined after moving to Decorah. "I wanted to give back to the community, meet people and do meaningful, hands-on work," he said. Smorstad has completed certification and is expected to be voted in as a full member in May. New recruits typically spend about a year in probationary status before entering active fire response. Public Education Officer Steve Vanden Brink said the period is designed to ensure readiness. "We keep them out of working fires until we're sure they have the training and understanding to know how to react," he said. Fire Chief Jeff Clement said the department has 27 members, with a full capacity of 35. It maintains an average response time of about nine minutes. Clement said the demands of training, unpredictable calls and employer flexibility can make participation challenging. "Our members are on call 24/7, and not all employers can let staff leave for calls," he said. "We expect a lot, but we also preach family first." When staffing is limited, the department relies on mutual aid from neighboring communities. "On a typical fire, we might have 15 to 18 people," Clement said. "That's where mutual aid comes in." As one of the larger and better-equipped departments in the area, Decorah crews also respond to calls beyond the city. "It only takes one major incident to stretch resources," Vanden Brink said. "That's what we train for." Despite the demands, volunteers say the experience is valuable. "No matter where I go, what I've learned will be useful," Averhoff said. Johnson said support from his employer, Decorah Bank and Trust, has made his service possible. "When I started, I told them I was a probationary member and they've been very accommodating," he said. "That support has been huge. I see myself sticking around for the long haul." Fire officials say they continue to welcome new members interested in serving. "If anybody is looking to give back, we'll train you," Vanden Brink said. "Just come down on a Wednesday night and ask questions."
