HSNEI Joins 'Empty the Shelters' Adoption Event

DECORAH — The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa will take part in the nationwide "Empty the Shelters" adoption event May 1–17, offering reduced adoption fees of $70 or less. The event will be held at the Love & Friendship Adoption Center, 2345 Millennium Road, with dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption. All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. "Ten years ago, Empty the Shelters began with a simple goal — to bring awareness to the incredible cats and dogs in shelters," said Cathy Bissell, founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation. "As we celebrate 10 years, we encourage everyone to consider adoption and help more pets find the homes they deserve." At HSNEI, staff say the focus is on thoughtful matches between pets and families. "Each animal is special to us," organizers said. "We work with adoptive families to consider home environment, lifestyle and preferences to find the best match for everyone." Among the pets currently available is Brownie, a 6-year-old husky described as affectionate and playful, with a "big heart and a bigger personality." After the loss of his owner, he has been adjusting at the shelter while winning over staff and volunteers. Avalanche, a 2-year-old husky, is more reserved at first but shows a gentle, playful side once comfortable. Usey, also 2, is an energetic dog who enjoys space to run and thrives on attention. Cats and kittens are also featured, including Hilda, a playful and affectionate kitten known for her clumsy, comedic energy, and Zelda, a more observant and poised companion with a quieter personality. HSNEI notes that many animals are more comfortable outside a shelter setting and may be placed in foster homes when possible to reduce stress and improve adoption outcomes. The organization is participating alongside hundreds of shelters across the country in the annual event, which aims to reduce barriers to adoption and help more animals find permanent homes.
