DECORAH — The Decorah Community School District and the City of Decorah on Monday approved a coordinated series of land easements and utility agreements tied to the district's new elementary school project. The actions came during separate special meetings held Monday afternoon, beginning with a noon school board meeting and followed later by a special session of the Decorah City Council. Together, the approvals addressed several logistical components needed for construction and long-term operation of the new school site, including stormwater management, sanitary sewer access, water infrastructure and sidewalk and utility placement. The school board opened a public hearing on the conveyance of real property at noon Monday at the district's Central Administration Office. No oral or written comments were received during the hearing, which adjourned after about one minute. After unanimously approving the agenda, the board unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the conveyance of easements to the city. Later Monday, the Decorah City Council held a special meeting to formally accept the easements. During council discussion, City Manager Travis Goedken told council members the school board had completed the necessary approvals earlier in the day, clearing the way for city action. The council unanimously approved a resolution accepting four easements and associated agreements connected to the elementary school property. Goedken also said the action included acceptance of a survey plat associated with the development site. Council members thanked staff and project participants for their work in moving the agreements forward. Before adjournment, Goedken provided a brief update on the project's permitting status, saying the development was still awaiting final comments tied to a building permit review and fire safety review.
