Deputies: Man Flees Traffic Stop, Later Caught in Stolen Coat

DECORAH — A Decorah man faces multiple charges following a traffic stop and a separate theft incident, according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office. Fredrick Jones, 46, of Decorah, was arrested April 30 after deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 8:05 p.m. on Old Stage Road. Authorities said the vehicle continued for a short distance at a high rate of speed before stopping at 2518 172nd Ave. Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail on charges of aggravated misdemeanor driving while barred and serious misdemeanor eluding. A search warrant for the vehicle was later issued and executed. According to the sheriff's office, Jones was released from jail at about 9:15 a.m. and went to the Sheriff's Office lobby to speak with deputies After Jones left the lobby, authorities received a report from an elderly woman who said she had left her coat in the lobby. Surveillance video reviewed by deputies showed Jones taking the coat from a chair, officials said. A short time later, officers with the Decorah Police Department located Jones at the Kwik Star on College Drive, where he was reportedly wearing the coat. Jones was arrested and transported back to the Winneshiek County Jail, where he was charged with fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor. The coat was recovered and returned to its owner.
