Inclusive Prom in Spillville Draws Hundreds from Across Northeast Iowa

SPILLVILLE, Iowa — The dance floor at the Inwood Ballroom was packed Saturday night as more than 300 people gathered for a prom designed specifically for individuals with disabilities from across northeast Iowa. Now in its 16th year, the free event in Spillville drew attendees ages 16 and older from seven counties: Winneshiek, Fayette, Allamakee, Clayton, Howard, Chickasaw and, for the first time, Floyd County. Organizer Sadie Wermers said the event has grown steadily over the years, both in size and reach. About 260 people RSVP'd this year, but attendance climbed to more than 330, she said. The idea for the event came 16 years ago after a local woman attended her sister's wedding at the ballroom and was captivated by the experience. Her family later organized a special prom night for her. The event continued, with Wermers and her family involved for the past 15 years. Wermers and her husband, Paul Wermers, Spillville's mayor, have focused on building an inclusive event that gives participants a chance to dress up, socialize and enjoy a traditional prom experience. "Guests absolutely look forward to this event," Wermers said, noting she has already received calls about next year's date. The event relies on volunteers and community support. About 40 volunteers from Stone Ridge Church helped with meals and table service. Food was provided by U2 BBQ, while the South Winn. trap team contributed an ice cream machine. Music was provided by DJ Matthew Shatek, and the Calmar Lutheran Church youth group assisted with setup and decorations. Priceless Moments Photography of Decorah documented the evening. Each attendee received a door prize, Wermers said, adding that organizers are always seeking additional sponsors and volunteers. Looking ahead, Wermers said the goal is to continue expanding outreach across the region and connecting with more families. "Inclusion is huge for us," she said.
