"Moments in Bloom" Theme Guides Week of Events at The Highlands

The Highlands to Celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week With Community Events May 12–16 Weeklong celebration themed "Moments in Bloom" features blood drive, food truck, plant sale and community engagement activities The Highlands, an Aase Haugen Community, will celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week 2026 with a series of community-focused events May 12-16 under the theme "Moments in Bloom." "We are incredibly proud of our team — their daily dedication, compassion and willingness to give back make The Highlands a true community," said Rex Nelson, BSN, administrator. "These events are a celebration of that spirit and an opportunity to connect with our neighbors in meaningful ways." Events open to the public include: Blood drive with LifeServe Blood Center — Tuesday, May 12, noon to 4 p.m. Residents and community members are invited to donate. Participants may register for appointment times online through The Highlands website. Gyro Palace food truck — Wednesday, May 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to purchase lunch and support a community gathering. Guests are encouraged to dine inside and view the new Gallery featuring local artists. Plantpalooza — Saturday, May 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or until sold out). The family-friendly plant sale will offer flowers and vegetables available for a free-will donation. Proceeds will support the creation and maintenance of therapeutic gardens at the new nursing facility. "Our theme, 'Moments in Bloom,' reflects the small, everyday acts of care that grow into deep connection and well-being for our residents," Nelson said. "We're grateful to open these events to the public — from lifesaving blood donations to shared meals and gardening — as ways to strengthen community ties and enhance life for older adults in Decorah." The Highlands and Aase Haugen Community provide senior living, skilled nursing and supportive services in Decorah.
