Luther College to Host 20-Sided Summer Camp for the First Time June 26-28

Be the reason future generations know what mattered in Decorah. Fund Decorah News today. DECORAH — Luther College will host a 20-Sided Summer Camp for the first time June 26-28. The overnight camp is open to students entering grades 10-12 and recent high school graduates. The camp's name refers to the 20-sided die central to fantasy tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. In those games, players encounter quests and battles that require collaboration, problem-solving and improvisation. Each player takes on a role with unique abilities while exploring scenarios managed by a dungeon master. "It's a real-world scenario in a fantasy setting. As the students play the game at the summer camp, they are investigating ethics and testing out the consequences of their actions in a collaborative environment, and it's all wrapped around creativity," said Joe Madrigal, associate professor of art at Luther. "The students learn by doing." The 20-Sided Summer Camp will combine storytelling, art and strategy. Participants will develop critical thinking, communication, teamwork and creativity skills designed to support academic success and intellectual growth. "Students interested in developing any of these skills should consider this camp," Madrigal said. Camp activities will also include hobby-based workshops such as scene and model painting. No prior experience is required, Madrigal said. Madrigal is organizing the camp alongside Sören Steding, professor of German; Ben Moore, professor of art; and Bobby Vrtis, associate professor of theatre. The group has played tabletop role-playing games together for years in their free time. The camp offers another opportunity for area students to experience life at Luther. The college has long hosted programs such as the Dorian Summer Camp for musicians and athletic camps for student-athletes. Madrigal said he is excited to expand those offerings for students interested in the arts. Be in the know, always!
