Vikings Share Top Spot, Finish Second on Tiebreaker at Jewel

LAKE CITY, Minn. — Decorah High School's golf team finished in a tie for first place before falling on a cardback tiebreaker at The Jewel Golf Club on Monday. Decorah and Albert Lea each walked away with a 310, with Winona close behind at 311. Pine Island/Zumbrota/Mazeppa finished fourth at 317, and Rochester Lourdes rounded out the field at 321. Albert Lea's Noah Teeter led all golfers with a 1-under-par 71. Winona's Logan Larsen shot a 73, while Decorah's Tommy Sexton and Joshua Scripture each posted 74s. Jacob Stevens followed with a 75 for the Vikings. Decorah's remaining scores included Jackson Naber (80), Caden Hubka (81), Evan Roe (83) and Kasen Tyler (87). Coach Casey Bouska said the team battled some seriously windy conditions. "We had a great tournament yesterday at The Jewel on a beautiful and challenging course," Bouska said. "We tied for first and lost on a cardback all the way until our sixth golfer with a top-notch Albert Lea team that qualified for state last year in Minnesota. It was very windy, but the team did not let the conditions dictate the outcome. They stayed the course and played 18 solid holes of golf." Bouska said the Vikings are learning to manage momentum swings as postseason play approaches. "The best part is we are starting to figure out there will be highs and lows on the course, but we are able to handle those moments," he said. "As we prepare for postseason play, we need to maximize our potential with course management." Looking ahead, Decorah returns to competition in a large invitational field on May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Legacy Golf Course in Clear Lake. That event will feature Humboldt, Holmen, Spirit Lake, Rosemount, Atlantic, Washington, Webster City, Clear Lake, Independence and additional teams. Get the inside scoop!
