"It's Time for Luther:" Gerdin Fieldhouse Celebrates Completion and Dedication

DECORAH — Luther College formally dedicated the new Gerdin Fieldhouse for Athletics and Wellness on Saturday, marking the completion of one of the largest capital improvement projects in the school's history with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, speeches from campus leaders and facility tours. The ceremony, held at 10 a.m., marked the official opening of the expanded athletics and wellness complex following a 22-month construction project that began in August 2024. Luther College President Brad Chamberlain said the project represents an investment in the future of the college and its students. "From its beginning, this project has been about rejuvenating and expanding our athletic facilities," Chamberlain said. "But more importantly, it's been about building pride and belief in Luther College." He said the new fieldhouse will help Norse athletics continue "fostering excellence in competition and building character in a sustaining community for generations to come." Chamberlain thanked the Birkestrand, Sather and Gerdin families, along with campaign volunteers, project members, contractors and design partners involved in the effort. He also recognized the Regents Center Campaign Fundraising Committee, the Decorah-area fundraising committee and project teams from RDG Planning and Design, Opus Design Build, Erdman Engineering, KCL Engineering, Skyline Construction Inc./Bruening Rock Products Inc. and Wicks Construction Inc. Student-athlete Gideon Armah-Amissah, a member of the Class of 2026, reflected on the impact the facility will have on current and future students. "Future students are going to walk in and feel the pride, energy and community that fills it," Armah-Amissah said. "I feel deeply grateful to have experienced this space during my time here at Luther." Alumnus and major donor Mike Gerdin, Class of 1992, also delivered remarks. The facility bears his family name. "It was time for Luther to invest in itself," Gerdin said. "There have been so many great people who have graduated from this place, and so many great people in this town that make these things happen. This gift is from my entire family, and we are very proud to be involved." The ceremony included a blessing by Melissa Bills, director of college ministries and campus pastor, and closing remarks from Athletics Director Megan Wilson. "Thank you for showing what one team can accomplish when a community believes in something bigger than itself," Wilson said. The ribbon cutting featured Chamberlain; Mike and Nicole Gerdin; Angela Janssen; Brian Janssen; Julie Durr; Eric Durr; Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand; Britt Sather; Marc Sather; Jenifer K. Ward; Renae Hartl; Patty Hetrick; Wilson; Armah-Amissah; and Bills. The event concluded with the Luther fight song performed by the Luther Trumpets under the direction of professor of music John T.
