JACKSON JUNCTION, Iowa — A senior prank at Turkey Valley Community School District briefly disrupted the school day Friday morning when members of the Class of 2026 used round hay bales to block the teachers' parking lot. Students placed the bales across the lot before sunrise and spray-painted them with smiley faces and the words "Senior 2026 Prank," a lighthearted sendoff for the graduating class. Arriving teachers pulled into the lot to find it blocked by hay bales, with students gathered nearby. The prank, which appeared to involve multiple students coordinating the use of farm equipment and materials, reflected a hallmark of rural communities: working together quickly and informally to carry out a plan. "In northeast Iowa, it simply means somebody knew where to find a trailer, somebody had access to a tractor, and everybody understood how to work together," Mayor Paul Wermers of neighboring Spillville said of the prank. That same type of resourcefulness, he shared, often carries beyond school years into roles such as coaching, volunteering and community leadership.
