April 2026 Among Warmest, Wettest on Record in Decorah

DECORAH — According to meteorologist and Luther College faculty member Richard Bernatz, April 2026 was one of the warmest and wettest Aprils on record in Decorah, according to local climate data dating back to 1894. The month's average temperature was 54 degrees, 6.7 degrees above normal, making it the fifth-warmest April recorded in the past 133 years. Average highs reached 66.6 degrees, while average lows measured 41.3 degrees. The warmest day of the month reached 83 degrees on April 22. The coldest temperature, 22 degrees, was recorded April 7. Decorah also saw significantly above-average precipitation during the month. A total of 7.22 inches of precipitation was recorded in April, more than double the historical average of 3.17 inches. The month ranked as the third-wettest April on record, behind only 2008 and 1973. Rainfall was recorded on 14 days during the month, compared with the typical nine or 10 days. The heaviest 24-hour rainfall total measured 2.16 inches on April 4. No measurable snowfall was recorded during the month. The report also noted that April continued a broader pattern of warmer and wetter-than-average conditions in the region. Eleven of the past 12 months have recorded above-average temperatures, while April marked the fourth consecutive month with above-average precipitation.
