Decorah Community School District Breaks Ground on New PK-2 Elementary School

DECORAH — The Decorah Community School District celebrated the official groundbreaking of its new PK-2 elementary school on May 12, surrounded by families, students, educators and community leaders. "Today is about investing in our children and creating a space where students can learn, grow, build friendships, and discover who they are for generations to come," DCSD Superintendent Dr. Tim Cronin said during the ceremony. "Projects like this happen because of the vision of our community when it comes together." Cronin said the event carried special meaning because students were able to take part in the celebration, emphasizing that "this project has always been about them." School Board President Cindy Goodner highlighted how the new facility will improve the day-to-day experience for both students and staff. "This project is about creating spaces that better support learning and childhood itself," Goodner said. "Classrooms filled with natural light, a roof that doesn't leak, spaces where students can collaborate without gathering in hallways, and playgrounds that are usable throughout the school year. These may sound like simple things, but they matter deeply to our students and staff every single day." Goodner thanked current and former school board members, district leaders, partners from the City of Decorah, the volunteer facilities committee, the Vote Yes committee, teachers, staff, and project teams from Miron Construction and Emergent Design for helping bring the vision to life. Tori Watson, principal of John Cline Elementary and West Side Early Childhood Center, led a demonstration showcasing what students are most excited about in the new building, including classrooms, the gymnasium, and outdoor playground spaces. "I want to thank the community, my staff, and everyone who believed in this project," Watson said. "We know the memories students will make in this new facility will take them long past their experience with us." The ceremony concluded with 10 student representatives joining current and former school board members for the official groundbreaking.
