Free Fraud Prevention Seminar Planned in Decorah

DECORAH — Northeast Iowa RSVP and the Iowa Insurance Division will host a free "Iowa Fraud Fighters" seminar June 12 at the Senior Citizens Hospitality Center in Decorah. The seminar is designed to help Iowans recognize and report fraud, protect their savings and avoid fraudulent investment schemes. Organizers said the program is especially geared toward older adults, though all community members are welcome to attend. According to FBI data released in April 2025, Americans lost $16.6 billion to fraudulent schemes in 2025, a 33% increase from 2023. "We are pleased to present this important fraud prevention message to people in Northeast Iowa," Deana Hageman, director of Northeast Iowa RSVP, said. "We hope these presentations will help educate Iowans on common scams and arm them with tools and tips to prevent fraud." The seminar also will introduce the "Double-check before you invest" initiative and share real-life examples of individuals who lost money to scams. The event is scheduled from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. June 12 at the Senior Citizens Hospitality Center, 806 River St. in Decorah. The Iowa Fraud Fighters seminar is presented by Northeast Iowa RSVP volunteers in partnership with local sponsors. Northeast Iowa RSVP connects volunteers age 55 and older with nonprofit service opportunities in Allamakee, Howard and Winneshiek counties. Get the inside scoop!
