Gubernatorial Candidate Rob Sand Launches Canvass Campaign in Decorah

DECORAH — Speaking to volunteers gathered for a canvassing launch in Decorah on Saturday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand urged supporters to focus less on partisan division and more on personal conversations as his campaign ramps up early voter outreach across Iowa. The event, held ahead of Iowa's 2026 gubernatorial election, brought together experienced canvassers and first-time volunteers as Sand's campaign emphasized door-to-door organizing months before the primary election. Campaign organizers said the early canvassing push is intended to shape voter impressions before a GOP nominee is selected. They said canvassers would focus on identifying undecided voters, recruiting volunteers and building attendance for Sand's planned "99 County, 100 Town Hall Tour" this summer. Sand framed the campaign's strategy around persuasion through conversation rather than confrontation. "If you encounter somebody, they say something you're not sure you agree with, say, 'Why do you feel that way?'" Sand told volunteers. "We think that we are so divided from each other, but that's mostly because there's a lot of people out there who want us to be divided from each other." The Decorah stop coincided with his parents' 50th wedding anniversary, Sand said during remarks and later in a brief press availability. He described the gathering as "part campaign event and part family visit." Sand repeatedly emphasized outreach to Republicans and independents, arguing many Iowa voters are exhausted by partisan conflict. "We have more registered Republican donors than any of the Republicans running for governor," Sand told volunteers, citing what he described as growing crossover support for his campaign. He argued voters are looking for "joy instead of injury" and "kindness instead of cruelty." The campaign also highlighted its fundraising performance, with Sand telling attendees the campaign broke the previous off-year fundraising record by raising "two and a half times" the previous mark, fueled largely by small-dollar donations averaging $75. Throughout his remarks, Sand contrasted his campaign's message with what he described as misplaced priorities among Republican lawmakers at the Iowa Capitol. He criticized Iowa's recent economic performance, declining education rankings and water quality issues while arguing entrenched political leadership has failed ordinary Iowans. "We know we can do better than we're doing," Sand said. "This is a huge piece of doing it." In a question-and-answer session with reporters afterward, Sand addressed several Northeast Iowa issues, including data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations and water quality protections. Sand said Iowa should stop offering tax incentives for large data centers and cryptocurrency-related facilities unless operators can demonstrate they are not straining local water supplies. "If they want to come here and they want to close their water loop so that we know how much water they're using and they're just reusing it, then I think we're fine with it happening here," Sand said. "But they've got to be making sure that they're not putting a burden on their neighbors." On water quality, Sand pointed to wetlands restoration as a key component of his environmental platform, referencing his previously released "A Healthier Iowa for All" plan. "One of the best things that you can do is build wetlands," Sand said. "There is no better water filter than the one that God created." He proposed expanding prairie potholes and wetlands through a reverse-auction system in which the state would prioritize environmentally significant areas and accept bids from landowners willing to establish wetlands. Sand also outlined what he called an "accountability agenda," including proposals for legislative term limits, mandatory prison sentences for public officials convicted of stealing taxpayer money, age limits for politicians and a ban on stock trading by elected officials. "I think politicians ought to have rules just like the rest of us," Sand said. The Decorah canvass launch reflected a broader strategy Sand has increasingly emphasized in public appearances: building a coalition that extends beyond traditional Democratic voters while focusing heavily on face-to-face organizing.
