Bruening Rock Products Recognizes Fourth-Quarter "Rock Solid Students" at Decorah High School

DECORAH — Decorah High School has announced the fourth-quarter recipients of its "Rock Solid Student" Award, sponsored by Bruening Rock Products. The quarterly award recognizes one student from each grade level, grades 9-12, for academic achievement or improvement, work ethic, character and integrity. Faculty members nominate students, and the high school office staff reviews submissions to select recipients each quarter. Through a partnership with LetterWerks, permanent plaques for each grade level are updated quarterly with engraved nameplates. Honorees also receive certificates and recognition in the Viking Newsletter. Fourth-quarter recipients are: Ninth grade: Rosella Burkholder Spanish teacher Hans Finanger described Burkholder as "the kind of student who makes me love teaching," citing her work ethic, thoughtful questions and classroom contributions. 10th grade: Claire Ko Business teacher Kara Trettin said Ko is "a leader in every sense of the word," highlighting her initiative, self-motivation and success in FBLA competition. 11th grade: Elliot Berland English teacher Nick Hirka praised Berland's diligence and leadership, saying he is a student who could be placed "into any scenario" and "do a wonderful job." 12th grade: Deborah Hougen Physical education teacher Cristy Nimrod said Hougen "always treats those around her with respect and commits to the goals she sets for herself."
