Wilson, Relay Teams Advance as Vikes Shine Friday at State

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Vikes added finals qualifiers and even a season-best performance Friday during day two of the state track and field championships at Drake Stadium. Lauren Luzum earned a state medal in the girls shot put, placing seventh overall, while teammate Grace Tangen narrowly missed the podium with a ninth-place finish. In relay events, the girls distance medley team of Ava Holthaus, Caylee Malanaphy, Claire Storhoff and Olivia Volkman finished 22nd. The boys distance medley relay team of Davis Walter, Peyton Webb, Mitchell Stemper and Bennett Coppola placed ninth, just missing a medal position. Renae Wilson advanced to the finals in the girls 100-meter hurdles after placing fourth in the preliminary round Friday. The girls 4x100-meter relay team also punched its ticket to the finals, qualifying fourth overall. Ava Holthaus and Cassandra Stammeyer were among the runners competing for the Vikes. The boys 4x400-meter relay team of Max Grimstad, Davis Walter, Bennett Coppola and Mitchell Stemper also advanced to the finals after qualifying fourth overall. The boys 4x100-meter relay team of Grant Knutson, Davis Walter, Landon Quandahl and Peyton Webb finished 13th while running a season-best time of 43.02 seconds. The boys 4x200 relay team of Landon Quandahl, Peyton Webb, Trevor Kuennen and Davis Walter finished 16th overall. In hurdle competition, Raelyn Newhouse placed 20th in the girls 400-meter hurdles, while Ashton Saltou narrowly missed the finals in the boys 400 hurdles with a ninth-place finish. The girls 4x400 relay team of Eden Northrup, Claire Storhoff, Addison Ivy and Raelyn Newhouse finished 19th with a season-best time of 4:08.76.
