Decorah Middle School Funds Eighth Clean Water Well Through Record-Breaking Fundraiser

DECORAH — Students at Decorah Middle School raised a record $9,006 during their annual fundraiser for Water to Thrive, helping provide clean water access to communities in Africa. School officials said this year's fundraising effort will fully fund the school's eighth clean water well through the nonprofit organization. Because a well through Water to Thrive costs about $6,000, the remaining funds will help start next year's project. The well funded by this year's students will eventually be built in Tanzania, Ethiopia or Uganda. School officials said they expect to learn the well's location next fall and hope students will receive photos and updates before the current seventh-grade class completes eighth grade. As part of the project, students participated in a "Water Walk" activity designed to help them understand the challenges many people face in accessing clean water. The activity simulated the long distances many families travel each day to collect water. "The water walk really made me grateful that I have the resources and opportunities that I do," seventh-grade student Viola Vrtis said. The fundraiser was part of a cross-curricular unit connecting global studies, science and English language arts classes. Students explored issues related to water access, health, geography, sustainability and storytelling while learning how local efforts can create global impact. "This project allows students to see that they can make a real difference in the world," Decorah Middle School Principal Justin Albers said. "It combines academic learning with empathy, service and global citizenship." Students, families, staff and community members contributed to the fundraiser, making this year's total the highest in school history. Be the first to know!
