Iowa food Service Workers Invited to ServSafe Certification Training

DECORAH — Food service managers and employees can register for the ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager course scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Winneshiek County Extension and Outreach, 2316 Sweet Parkway Road in Decorah. The course is intended for individuals with oversight and management responsibilities in food service operations. Participants will have the opportunity to take the certification exam to become a certified Food Protection Manager. The course consists of one six-hour class followed by the certification exam. Participants who successfully pass the exam will be certified by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation as a Food Protection Manager. The course fee is $175, or $150 for members of the Iowa Restaurant Association. Registration closes three weeks before the course begins to allow participants time to receive course materials and the ServSafe workbook by mail. Organizers said no exceptions will be made to the registration deadline. ISU Extension and Outreach partners with the Iowa Restaurant Association to offer the ServSafe program. Under the Iowa Food Code, at least one employee in a food establishment with supervisory and management authority over food preparation and service must be a Certified Food Protection Manager. ServSafe is one of several certification programs accredited by the American National Standards Institute-Conference on Food Protection. The program incorporates current FDA Food Code standards and food safety research. Participants learn best practices related to safe food handling, cleaning, sanitizing and other food safety essentials. ServSafe certifications are valid for five years.
