Decorah Public Library Announces June Book Discussions

DECORAH — Decorah Public Library staff will host five book discussions in June, featuring literary fiction, history and speculative fiction titles. All groups are open to the public, and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Multiple-copy sets are provided by the Friends of Decorah Public Library. The Happy Hour Book Group will meet at Pulpit Rock Brewing Co. at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, to discuss "Lost Lambs" by Madeline Cash. The novel follows individuals grappling with identity, connection and the consequences of past choices. The History Book Group will meet on the second floor of the library at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 18, to discuss "Empire's Crossroads: A History of the Caribbean from Columbus to the Present Day" by Carrie Gibson. The book examines the Caribbean's history, from European exploration through the modern era, focusing on colonialism, cultural exchange and the region's global influence. The Friday Book Group will meet on the second floor of the library at 2 p.m. Friday, June 19, to discuss "33 Place Brugmann" by Alice Austen. Set in Brussels, the novel explores the lives of residents in an apartment building and the effects of a violent act on their community. The Speculative Short Fiction Group will meet via Zoom at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, to discuss "The Tusks of Extinction" by Ray Nayler. The novella combines science fiction and conservation themes while exploring questions surrounding extinction, memory and technological intervention. The Speculative Fiction Book Group will meet at 6:45 p.m. via the same Zoom link to discuss "A Natural History of Dragons" by Marie Brennan. Written as a memoir, the fantasy novel follows a woman who challenges social expectations to pursue the study of dragons.
