DECORAH — At a time when many colleges and universities across the country are facing financial pressures, Luther College has been recognized as one of the strongest institutions financially, earning an A+ rating in Forbes' 2026 College Financial Grades. The annual Forbes assessment evaluates the financial health of more than 900 private, nonprofit colleges and universities with enrollments exceeding 500 students. This year's analysis, conducted with data from Perspective Data Science, introduced a new methodology designed to provide a clearer picture of long-term financial stability. According to Forbes, nearly half of the colleges evaluated received a grade of C or lower, while 27 percent earned the lowest grade of D. Many institutions were found to be drawing from their endowments to maintain operations amid declining enrollment and rising financial pressures. Colleges nationwide are navigating a shrinking population of high school graduates, decreased international student enrollment, rising costs, and growing questions among families about the value and affordability of a college degree. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and uncertainty surrounding the future workforce have also prompted some students and families to reconsider traditional higher education, according to Forbes. Luther College's A+ rating reflects years of planning and community support, says Luther College President Brad Chamberlain. "Luther's strong financial position is a reflection of the challenging and collaborative work undertaken by Luther's administrators, faculty, staff, governing board, alumni, and local community over the years," said Chamberlain. "Working together, we have made substantial strides in recent years to improve Luther's business model by clarifying missional identity and focus, increasing revenues, prioritizing expenses, and minimizing debt. We are especially grateful for the generosity of alumni and donors whose financial support has enabled Luther to thoughtfully and proactively address this challenging moment in higher education with confidence and courage."
