Local Extension Efforts Contribute to Statewide Award for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

WINNESHIEK, ALLAMAKEE, CHICKASAW AND HOWARD COUNTIES, Iowa — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has received the Reaching All Iowans Award recognizing the statewide impact of its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, supported by the Iowa Center. The Reaching All Iowans Award is given annually to recognize Extension staff, faculty and county councils that demonstrate a commitment to reaching and engaging Iowans. Extension staff and trained RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) volunteers were part of the effort, helping deliver free tax preparation services to residents across northeast Iowa. During the 2026 tax season, VITA sites serving the four counties and surrounding areas assisted 733 individuals with tax preparation services. Based on estimated preparation costs, the program saved taxpayers approximately $406,500 they otherwise would have spent on tax preparation. The effort was supported by nearly 4,939 volunteer hours, reflecting strong community involvement in the program. Residents from Winneshiek (349), Allamakee (253), Chickasaw (82) and Howard (49) counties accessed VITA services, highlighting the program's regional reach. "The VITA program is a powerful example of how Extension connects Iowans with resources that strengthen financial well-being," said Jan Steiner, northeast Iowa VITA site coordinator. "This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff and volunteers who work directly with individuals and families in our communities." The VITA program, supported by the Iowa Center, provides free tax preparation assistance to individuals with low to moderate incomes, seniors and others who may benefit from additional support. The services help taxpayers file accurate returns, claim available credits and retain more of their income in local communities. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach sponsors VITA in partnership with the Iowa Center for Economic Success. As leader of the Iowa VITA Coalition, the Iowa Center partners with 21 organizations to operate 82 sites across the state.
